Crate size is critically important — and most people get it wrong in both directions. Too large and the puppy toilets in the back corner. Too small and it's uncomfortable and stressful. Here's the formula.
How to Size a Crate
The crate should be large enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably — but no larger. When in doubt, use the divider panel to reduce the usable space and expand it as the puppy grows.
Sizing by adult weight:
- Under 25 lbs adult: 24-inch crate
- 25–50 lbs adult: 30–36 inch crate
- 50–90 lbs adult: 42-inch crate
- 90+ lbs adult: 48-inch crate
Wire vs Plastic vs Soft-Sided
Wire crates are our recommendation for puppies. They offer visibility (reducing isolation stress), ventilation, and a divider panel for sizing. The MidWest iCrate is the market leader for good reason. Plastic crates are better for travel (airline-approved) but offer no divider option. Soft-sided crates are not suitable for puppies — most will chew through them within a week.
Making the Crate Positive
Never use the crate as punishment. Feed all meals in the crate, hide treats inside throughout the day, and build positive associations for at least a week before ever closing the door. A puppy that loves its crate is a game-changer for the whole household.
